Tiananmen Square was built is 1651 and is the largest city square in the world at 400,000 square meters.
The square consists of the "Monument to the People's Heroes" and "Mausoleum of Mao Zedong." According to Wikipedia, Mao had wished to be cremated. I think it is ironic; his body was embalmed and put on display to be viewed by millions.
Although Tiananmen Square is heavily monitored by uniformed and plain clothesed policemen, nothing exciting happened the day we visited it.
