The first stop was the Hanging Temple in Datong.
According to the propaganda, the Hanging Temple was constructed more than 1,400 years ago. There was a caveat of “many repairs and extensions result in today’s scale.” Translation, the original construction was a fraction of what it is today.
Basically, they cut horizontal holes into the cliff used to large pieces of timber to support the structures. All of this, hanging over 75 meters above the ground (kind of neat for about 5 minutes or so).
Statues of Confucius, Laozi, and Sakymuni (founders of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism) are found within the Temple. This is probably a modern day effort to show cultural and religious diversity within China; or it may have been like that a thousand years ago… you decide. Regardless, it was an interesting trip.

Note the ancient satellite dish?
