The Island of Gorée was one of the first places in Africa settled by Europeans; the Portuguese first arrived in 1444. The island has since changed hands several times; from the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and French. Eventually, it was a French colony (more or less).

Gorée is said to be a part of the Atlantic slave trade; however, few slaves were processed from here; but it is a famous tourist spot to see the inner workings of slave trade. After the slave trade (1770s/80s), the island was a port for more legitimate trades. Gorée also has a beautiful church.

The island is one of Senegal’s most famous tourist sites and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
