"Based upon the ancient city on orginal version of famous painting in Song Dynasty: A Picture of Bianliang's Pure Brightness Festival Fair and invested by Japanese partner, it was built in 1987 for a historical feature film - "Dunhuang," co-shot by Chinese and Japanese film makers. Therefore, it is also called the Imitated Ancient City of Shazhou or Dunhuang Movie and Television City. Set on the edge of the Gobi desert, Ancient City of Dunhuang is a blend of 1000 year old folk customs in the western region. Standing tall city gate towers, three city gates are open towards the east, the west and the south. Five major streets were paved in the inner city. Representing the majestic appearance of Dunhuang City, a place of great strategic value, during the Tang and Song Dynasty, it is regarded as a construction museum in the West of China, which has become the largest movie and television base in the west, especially for shooting movies. Other than "Dunhuang", a dozen of movies and TV shows such as "The Legend of Deification, New Longmen Tavern, Night Talk in Dunhuang and so on were shot here, this spot also attracts a great number of tourists..."
