This weekend I went on a short walking tour of Ulaanbaatar.
From my hotel, you can see a statue of Joseph Stalin. Kind of neat, eh.
Next stop was Sukhbaatar Square. Damdin Sukhbaatar was the "hero of the revolution" when he declared Mongolia's final independence from the Chinese in 1921. The statue in the middle of the square is Sukhbaatar riding a horse.
The north end of the square was created to celebrat Chinggis Khaan's 800-year anniversary of his coronation. In the center is Chinggis Khaan, with two mounted soldiers and with a couple of generals on either side.
From the square, I strolled through several uninteresting buildings until I arrived at the Gandantegchinlen Khild "the great place of complete joy". This monastery was probably one of the most interesting I've been to in Mongolia. Hearing the Monks chant while watching people feed the pigeons was very peaceful. I probably stayed here for an hour...
The rest of the tour was uneventful. Enjoy the pictures.
