This past week was much better than the first 3 days. I’m starting to become more proficient at finding my way around town while using public transportation. I have also have had the opportunity to meet some truly wonderful people.
Each day at work is also getting better, I have not entirely worked my way out of the “wet paper bag” but I am making progress. In hindsight, I believe screwing up on the first day is the best way go…it keeps everyone’s expectations pretty low. LOL
This morning I went on a small embassy sponsored tour of the Capital Museum of Beijing (首都博物馆) it was an interesting building with lots of people and, of course, “old stuff”. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t stay out so late the night before.
Again, this trip allowed me to meet more people outside the office and you cannot beat a guided tour of the city/museum. We took the subway to the museum. It was more crowded that I wanted it to be on a Saturday morning, but it was fast, convenient, and cheap (approximately 35-40 cents, I think…).
After the strolling through the museum for a couple of hours we had lunch. I had beef curry noodles; yummy…it really helped my hangover. When lunch was over they toured a nearby fabric store. By this time, I have had all the fun I could stand, so I broke away from the tour and took the bus home. This bus ride was spectacular; it went right in front of Tiananmen Square. I was awestruck by the size of that place (really, really, big). Oh by the way, riding the bus is also inexpensive, depending on which bus you take it costs anywhere from 10-20 cents. If I wanted to splurge on a taxi, it would have cost 3-4 dollars. And yes, you will still spend about 5 bucks for a Starbucks coffee.
When I got back home, I just took a shower and a long nap. This is really an interesting place!
